December 2021 Club Minutes was a collaborative activity by Linda A and Donna R.
Linda A:
It was decided to have the January meeting be in Zoom form only.
For the January meeting, Sue Adams talked to Charlene Schaffer who has various options for teaching classes, and we settled on all of us making clothes for Teddy Bears, to be given to Donna’s “300 Naked Bear’s” project!
There will be a 2-hour class, then a break to work on the clothes, then Charlene will return later in the day for review and discussion. The Zoom will remain open during the working period.
Treasurer’s report: Bank balance $8990.02 plus $.08 interest
Election to fill the positions of the Leadership Team proposed by recent discussion will take place at the February meeting
Donna R:
Susan will contact Charlene Schaffer and Diana Sullivan to set up a demo for January Meeting - on knitting outfits (and maybe bears) for Teddy Bears. The club members want to donate to the charity knitting outfits for Teddy Bears given to abused children in upstate NYwhich Donna Rogers has used . The hope is for a 2 hour workshop in morning , time to work on project, and then meet with presenter again 12 later in day . Susan will negotiate a price less than $300.
The monitor for Care and Concern will be reimbursed about $25 (reference to the actual bill) for expenses for cards and postage.
Sandy Eldred has a new email address: eldredsje@gmail.com
Discussion followed on what purpose/goals of our Club (and hence the time priority at the actual Club meetings) is to KNIT, and SHARE/Learn new skills and info related to knitting.
Discussion: The membership of the Leadership Team.
1). This is an elected team to meet separately from the monthly meetings and make decisions for the Club to be reported to the Club meetings (making the meetings much shorter).
2). It will have 5 members: treasurer, recording secretary, program chairperson, 1 representative from the technology committee, and 1 member-at-large
3). One member (rotating) from this team will run the monthly meetings (in person and zoom). They will be trained and reminded to start recording of the meetings under the Silver Needles account (not their own Zoom account).
4). A quorum of 3 out of 5 for conducting the separate meetings
Other roles which are volunteers and not elected, ie. Voluntary
- Technology committee: These members probably will have the greatest time commitment.
- a) It will have 3 members.
- b) Members will be the backups for all the functions of that committee.
(1). They will be the gmail communications (accounts and monitoring),
(2). website updates and monitoring,
(3). and zoom administrator.
c). The website and email monitoring would be updated within 2 months meeting of notification. The email list would be updated before the next monthly meeting. The updates will NOT occurring on a daily or weekly schedule.
d). It was decided that the Facebook page administrator, requires a lot of time to daily monitor and that info would be a duplicate of the Website and therefore is not a priority at this time.
- e) Representation from this Technology committee would be on the Leadership team.
- Other roles : (and more can be added as perceived as needed)
a). Monitor for care and concern
Discussion then focused on Dues for 2022.
- Dues will be $40 for the year with the usual ‘late’ membership to be more (TBD )
- Dues will NOT be paid by the members of the Leadership Team nor the Technology Committee (total of 8 persons), and for the life members.
Minutes Nov 12, 2021
Attendees: Marie Hornbein, Linda Corsover, Sam Decker, Susan Adams, Brenda LaMae, Donna Rogers, Anita Cornell, Betty Besio, Sandra Eldreds, Diane Keen, Wendy Taber
- Show and Tell about knitting projects done at retreat and since. Lots of inspiration and some problem solving.
- General consensus was that retreat was fun, that the knitting area was nice, open, and well lit, and that having the kitchen nearby meant that food was handy. Accommodation was close by, but booking was challenging due to other local events happening concurrently. There was discussion about future retreats having meals provided, accommodation on site. Susan Adams is gathering information from White Eagle Conference Center and Watson Homestead. Possible date is March 24-27, 2022.
- Leadership: Discussed what members are doing for the club and the need for some type of leadership structure for program planning and club maintenance. Right now Brenda LaMae, our treasurer, is the only elected member. It was suggested that gathering a description of the various tasks members are doing for the club would be helpful, so that members would know better what roles they were taking on. Briefly discussed were Treasurer, Website management, Zoom, Gmail, Program planning, and Communications. Members were asked to forward a description of what they do to Wendy Taber prior to next month’s meeting.
- Treasurer’s Report: $9789.84, with checks for the retreat (2x $400) not accounted as yet.
- Communication: discussed having a Facebook page for the club. There was one but it no longer reflects current membership. Diane Keen offered to look into starting an official SNMKC page.
Next meeting: Dec 10 will be zoom and in-person.
(Respectfully submitted W. Taber)
October 2021 Club Minutes. Zoom and In-person
Attendees: Stephanie Kolbert;, Anita Cornell, Betty Besio, Donna Roberts, Susan Adams, Marie Hornbein, Brenda LaMay, Anne Auld, Lisa Ferguson, Wendy Taber
Show and Tell: attendees of the September retreat showed what they had made at the retreat. Lots of socks made by Deb E. Brenda D got going on her new csm. Betty B worked on 2-color tuck blankets on an extended bed with many colors. Marie H. made gnomes, socks, and the pieces for a rectangle vest. Sandy worked on a baby back zip sweater. Anita showed us how to make a Real Swatch, using many colors in 2 weights of yarns. Wendy made socks, a rectangle sweater, a drop stitch shawl, and scarves on the 2 KX 350’s that Susan Adams had set up. Lots of fun.
Discussed issues from the September Retreat: 2 conflicting events at the lodge, meals, and the desire to have future retreats include accommodations, meals, and an place where we have pleasant scenery and a place to walk. Space was not an issue.
Discussed potential issues for the October Retreat. 15 people currently on the list to attend. Meals – some collaboration underway to have some food at the lodge and things like subs picked up. Space: Each attendee to only set up 1 machine in the main room. Masks to be worn inside. Accommodations in the Cortland area tight.
Marie H presented via a slide show taking a hand knit asymmetrical shawl to the machine. (see 2021 Patterns).
Zoom: it was decided to continue having a zoom pro account, and Zoom is offering a discount. Anita and Brenda will follow up on this.
Leadership Roles: Wendy has been leading the club meetings for the past year or so and wants to open the opportunity to other members. There was some discussion but no volunteers as yet.
Treasurer’s Report: $9856.15
(respectfully submitted by w. taber)

July 9th, 2021 meeting was held at the Cortland Masonic Lodge and also on zoom.
Present at the lodge were: Sandra Eldred, Anita Cornell, Anne Auld and Joanne Andersen
Present on Zoom were: Wendy Taber, Betty Besio, Ina Kushnir, Linda Corsover, Brenda LaMay, Diane Keen, Marie Hornbein
July zoom recording: https://us02web.zoom.us/rec/share/ESwv2mwBoW9qUW3LdSacXDN8sZVC0PHiAwZdWAMmBYiE4x31D7s4PaAKUwTedq6N.FYsHZriGD9ddvpwr Passcode: $2&2etr@
We started with Show and Tell - watch the video above for details.
Anita Cornell presented the monthly program on Basic Garter Carriage Usage, Maintenance and Deep Cleaning. See her notes attached. Noone participated in the offered deep cleaning session following the business meeting.
Business Meeting:
- Deb Adams (recording secretary) was unable to attend so Anita Cornell took these notes
- Fall Retreat Survey Results (full results attached to this email)
- 17 members responded
- All 17 were interested in having a retreat
- of the three date choices, Option C - October 28th-31st was most popular; followed by Option B - September 30th - October 3rd and then Option A - September 23- 26th
- There were anonymous volunteers for all work duties except for Food/Restaurant Coordination
- The Retreat Committee met on July 8th to review Survey Results and move forward with retreat planning (Wendy Taber, Susan Adams and Anita Cornell were present). The outcome of this meeting:
- Retreat will be offered: Option C - October 28th-31st AND Option A - September 23- 26th as this will allow all who answered the survey to attend
- There will need to be a minimum of 8 people to hold each retreat
- There will be a maximum of 16 people allowed at each retreat
- One Retreat Registrar will be needed to move forward with retreat planning. This position will be offered at the July general membership meeting as no one offering on the survey wrote their name in the comments (all were anonymous). The Registrar will become a member of the Retreat Planning Committee.
- As this is a DIY retreat, all participants will need to share the workload. These work positions will be determined and assigned by each of the two retreat groups.
- Registration deadline will be needed by 8/31/21 noon EST in order to determine if there are enough attendees to continue planning.
- Members in good standing as of 3/1/21 will have free attendance to the seminar. Others wishing to attend the retreat will need to join the Club at the published $50 membership rate.
- The retreats will follow any Cortland County Covid guidelines in place as of the retreat dates.
- The Registration form will contain a disclaimer holding both the Club and the Lodge harmless for any injuries or damage to equipment. The Registration form will also contain a statement regarding the DIY/work expected aspect of the retreat
- The club will pay the Lodge $400 for each 4 day retreat.
- General Membership discussion regarding the retreat:
- Betty Besio graciously offered to be the Registrar for retreat signup. The club thanks her for this offer!
- Betty will be added to the Retreat Planning Committee which currently consists of Wendy Taber, Susan Adams, Anita Cornell, Deb Everts and Linda Fischer
- The Retreat Planning Committee will meet on Thursday July 22 at 7pm on Zoom. Wendy offered to set up and send out zoom invite.
- Wendy Taber offered to set up a private Facebook page for retreat attendees to share information on both retreats.
- Anne Auld brought machine knitting equipment that she picked up. The equipment was donated to the club by Eileen Driscoll in Ithaca. Anne kindly offered to coordinate retreat door prizes of this equipment.
- It was noted that the tables we normally use to put our knitting machines on at the lodge, were not present. Brenda LaMay offered to contact the Lodge to see if these tables would be returning for our use at future meetings and the retreat.
- Anita Cornell reminded the club that our zoom meeting recordings are larger than the recording size allowed by our zoom membership. Zoom has not deleted our recording yet but could do so at any time. Membership levels that would allow us to have these recordings in perpetuity would cost in excess one 1k. Anita suggested that members either save or watch the recording as soon as the recording details are sent out each month (usually within one day of the meeting by Anita Cornell). Ina Kushnir requested that Anita send reminder emails with recording details before recordings are deleted. Anita declined to take on this extra work but if Ina or anyone else would like to do so, please "Reply All" to this email to volunteer for this task. Joanne Andersen suggested that we record just the business meeting portion to reduce size. Those present appeared to agree. This will mean the "Meeting Leader" will need to start and end the zoom recording at the appropriate times (see below).
- Treasurer Benday LeMay reported the club has a balance of $9,655.90
- There was a discussion that the summer meetings have been sparsely attended. Summer meetings were scheduled for 2021 only (due to missing so many meetings because of covid) and will not be continued in the future.
- Anita Cornell mentioned that she seems to have fallen into the role of "Meeting Leader" and this is not something she is willing to add to her current club task list. Please "Reply All" to this email to volunteer for this task.
- The August meeting presentation was slated to be Shirley Smith on floatless fairisle. Shirley is unavailable for the August meeting but can do this demo in October or November. The club has no programs scheduled for the remainder of the year. We need volunteers to step up for a month - please "Reply All" to this email to volunteer. We do have a video list from our first survey. It has been attached to this email for those who missed it the first time.
Please "Reply All" to this email with anything I may have missed.

Angle blankets done with the Garter Carriage by Sandy.
Demetre brought her sweater she is working on.
Shirley via zoom showed a shawl pattern, stitch holder (A DIY project) and a vest.
Anita showed several varieties of shawl pins she made.
Wendy showed items she had made with 2 carriage knitting. She also demonstrated that process to the group.
Business Meeting:
Talked in depth about the Retreat Planning. This will be a Do It Yourself retreat meaning each person will be responsible for arranging their own lodging and meals. The first date proposed did not work for some members so a suggestion was made to have 2 retreats at the Lodge. The club would pay the Lodge $400 for each event. This is open to members only.
Furniture will be moved by the lodge to open the hallways. This will allow us to use the same meeting room we currently use and the full hallway. The kitchen will be available. Food will be organized by the group attending that specific event.
Limit of 16 members per session.
A survey will go out with the following questions and a 2 week return time. Results will be forwarded to the Planning Committee.
Pick 1st, 2nd, 3rd or Unable to attend.
Dates: Sept 23rd to 26th
Sept 30th to Oct 3rd
Oct 28th to Oct 31st.
Each of the 2 events will need a Hostess (manage keys/lodge), Registration Person, And Food Coordinator.
Dry Camping is allowed, which means no water or electricity available. No dumping of waste must keep the noise level down and the parking lot clean.
For Food Suggested to have 2 main meals as a group; possibly a lunch and a dinner, then the rest will be either on your own, or as coordinated by the group.
Suggested for this to be known as the “DIY 2021 Retreat.”
Planning Committee for the Retreat will be:
Linda Fisher, Deb Evert, Sue Adams, Anita Cornell, and Wendy Taber.
July meeting presentation will be Anita on garter carriage and August is Shirley Williams.
Respectfully Submitted,
Deb Allen
May 10, 2021 Silver Knitting Minutes
Present: Anita Cornell (Leader of Mtg), Sandy Elders, Sue Adams, Malvena Kushnir, Demetre Bove, Anne Auld, Diane Keen, Deborah Everts, Brenda LaMay, Linda Corsover, Lisa Fergusion and Deb Allen
Sue Adams talked about upcoming classes she will be teaching.
Anne Auld showed a VCR – General Technique of Knitting which is available to borrow.
Show and Tell:
Demetre shoed and asked for help making a sweater. It is currently in pieces and asked for suggestions for seaming. Different ones were suggested, hanging rights sides together then binding off. For the collar it was suggested to seam 1 shoulder up 1st, then hold up to the machine to determine length around the neck. Once determined knit half the width for the collar. Hand the sweater each needle will have 2 stitches on them. The Knit the remaining rows of the collar. Bind Off. Remember to bind of loosely. Stitch the collar down in place. This technique covers the salvage edge of the sweater neck. Seam the rest of the sweater as you wish.
Another, suggestions were basting together on a sewing machine, this also helps with making sure of the size and fitting. The can either hand sew or seam with the machine.
Linda Corsover showed a sweater type dressing doing on Garment Design used a bulky punch card machine. Has a deadline for an upcoming even.
Anita showed a side to side knit sweater she is designing. She is currently writing up the directions. Only seam is under the arm with some crochet around the edge. Asked if anyone in the club might want to be a tester when she was ready.
Deb Allen showed a block that was done corner to corner, then rehung with opposite side facing and knitted similarly to the log cabin method. Also showed a sun dress with a matching side to side sweater.
Lisa Fergusen told us about her unexpected goat babies! As well as how the rest of the herd is doing.
April, 2021 Silver Needles Machine Knitting Club monthly meeting
In Attendance: Anita Cornell, Wendy Taber, Sam Decker, Debbie Allen, Ina Kushnir, Brenda LaMay, Kaye Dedrick, Susan Adams, Sandy Eldred, Demetre Bove, Anne Auld, Diane Keen, Linda Corsover, Lisa Ferguson, Melissa Spafford.
Anne told us all about the 2 hour workshop that Ogallyn Joly is offering on April 24th. The topic is advanced finishes on cut and sew garments. The fees are $35. Anne is considering taking the class to see how she likes Ogallyn Jolly for a possible demonstrator for our club.
Show and Tell: Wendy has been busy as usual. She showed us a neat vest that was knit on her passap using a technique of putting 2 plaid (or different) stitch patterns over each other in DAK and knitting it in DBJ. She also shared the trim on this vest which is a double bed trim, knit to fold in half, sewn down using the sewing machine and then folded and whipped down to finish it.
Wendy also shared the leftover cotton yarn “scrap” sweater she knit sideways adding Ronnie’s Rib from Carol Scott’s workshop on the bottom and cuffs. The pattern came from an old book – “Simple fun and easy machine knitting”, even missing the center several pages Wendy found a great pattern to use. If you have that book (with a blue cover) she would love to see what goodies might be on the missing pages.
Anita showed us her wild poncho with a single bed, fold over trim knit on 11 needles with the center needle out of work, steamed flat, sewed on with the sewing machine folded and hand stitched down.
Anne had a great tuck fabric to show that taught her how to line up a pattern to hand punch it and make the design flow seamlessly. It is heading to a cut and sew tank top – we all liked the geometric design and had to be shown where the issue was. We all see our own flaws before anyone else can.
Anne is looking for the 2015 Finger Lakes Seminar book – she can’t find hers.
As Anne was not in love with the color of her tuck fabric, Wendy shared her experience of a RIT liquid dye that is designed for coloring all fibers including acrylic. Labeled something like “universal” dye. She uses it to over dye white cotton knit into a 3 color jacquard fabric to add interest. It only takes a teaspoon or so to get the job done using vinegar, a big pot of water, some heat and a bit of patience. Make sure you wash the dyed fabric well after to ensure it does not bleed onto other garments.
Susan Adams shared that she would be stepping away from her leadership role in the club. This leaves a great opportunity for members to come alongside the leadership team and help the club succeed. In brainstorming what roles Susan fills and asking for assistance in filling those roles we came up with this list:
- communications person: Since Donna Rogers has been faithful to monitor the club email (and she was not present so…) Thank you Donna for your official role as our communications chairperson
- Demo coordinator: Anne Auld has agreed to be the person to contact possible demonstrators once the education committee identifies who to contact and what we want from them.
- Secretary: Deb Allen is penciled in but needs to see where she will be placed once she gets back to work. Congratulations on your healing well enough to get back at it!
- Zoom coordinator: Anita Cornell will continue in that highly technical role.
- Treasurer: Brenda LaMay will keep that job with Donna as her lovely assistant
- Website: Wendy Taber will keep up the site with assistance from Anita
- Education committee: currently has Anne, Brenda, Wendy, Sandy Eldred and Anita. It would be great to have a couple more members involved in the Education committee. Meetings have been on zoom and can be flexible to accommodate everyone’s schedule.
- Leadership: It was decided that it is helpful to have one person who hosts the meetings and functions as the leader/face of the club. Brenda will connect with Joann Andersen to see if she is up for that role again. Please consider joining the leadership team to make your club run smoothly.
PASSWORD: in case you missed it, the password for 2021 Members, to get into the members area on the site is : KnitZoomLove2021
Also in case you wanted to look here is the link to last month’s demo: https://us02web.zoom.us/rec/share/lB2j70YeYzLc_jlTrXn1iwDihdZLbYil03eD7WuW51j8C8CHqYbSbVuUjFx9BMn9.0ql1roYHwxCp4igp password is March2021# This video will be available for the next 2 weeks.
Survey: The survey monkey worked out well and Anita sends a thank you to those who suggested it. PLEASE take the couple of minutes to fill it out. We have until April 17th to complete the survey
Even though the whole club has not responded to the survey, we realized that there are members who cannot attend our Friday morning meetings. Discussion about meeting times ensued. It was determined that after this survey data is gathered, an additional survey might need to be generated to determine a) how we can reach those who cannot join us on Friday morning, b) would an additional demo time be helpful.
Treasurer reported that we have $9667.22 and made $.08 interest
Lisa joined and shared a picture of a cute blue tuck sweater using a tuck pattern from the Carol Scott class and a raglan pattern that she received from Anita. Hand knit the bottom, cuff and collar using a stretchy bind off. Link attached here: https://youtu.be/SbzeEg6XMwM
Sam Decker did the demo on Color changers. What an informative presentation. Many of us did not know about using it for multi colored fairisle. Sam’s pictures were very clear and combined with her videos we all got a great education on using the color changer. Anita had a chart about the different models, what machines they work on and if they can do any of the changes automatically. That chart is included below. Great presentation (her first which makes us even more impressed) great information! Thank you Sam. The recording of her entire demo is found on YouTube with this link: https://us02web.zoom.us/rec/share/uYvM2mpciCVPNY11Wd45K_FlkywfIuKV9U4_jWVaYHL8gDRI5fmx-EDjeplOuVNj.hD0fKRU7c6TcKg_F The password is April2021# and the video will be available for the next 2 weeks.
Anita shared her success in finding 3d printable machine knitting small parts and pieces for our knitting machines. https://www.thingiverse.com/search?q=machine+knitting&type=things&sort=relevant is where to find the parts schematic and https://www.treatstock.com/3d-printing-services/ is the printing company. She said the parts were very reasonably priced. Thank you Anita for this valuable information.
MAY: Wendy Taber will be showing us about using 2 carriages on one bed. With what we learned about color changers on top of 2 carriage work this should elevate the color work we are doing to another level. We can’t wait to see your show and tell!
